It was day 150, Monday August 1, 2011, of being on the road!! What an accomplishment and we only have 150 more before we get back to Florida. Since it was a special day we decided to go visit the gold mining town of Chicken. The road has lots of frost heaves and is being repaired in numerous spots. Tok is about 80 miles and takes 2 hours because of the road conditions. We did not see many campers going either way today and it surprised us as everyone talks of doing the “Top of World” highway. The town has about 20 full time residents which grows to about 40 during the summer. They produce their own electric and bring in water and we can not imagine living there in the winter. You have to be a survivalist and part hermit. When we got to “town” which is about 6 or 8 buildings there weren't to many people around. We visited the gift shops, had lunch and bought a few souvenirs. The lunch was very good and the price was reasonable, surprising when everything has to come from at least 80 miles away. No we didn't have CHICKEN!! They do have a neat bar with a lot of hats hanging from everywhere and some killer chickens. Also very good blueberry pie and cinnamon buns, yum, yum.
The trip was complete by seeing 3 moose and 2 calves along the road. It is always exciting to see them but a truck hit one on Saturday. Look at the damage!
We are ready to move on to Haines Junction on Wednesday and look forward to heading South!
